Alt.religion.scientology Week in Review summarizes the most significant
postings from the Usenet group Alt.religion.scientology for the preceding
week for the benefit of those who can't follow the group as closely as
they'd like. Out of thousands of postings, I attempt to include news of
significant events, new affidavits, court rulings, new contributors,
whatever. I hope you find it useful. Like many readers of a.r.s, I have a
kill file. So please take into consideration that I may not have seen some
of the most significant postings.

The articles in A.r.s Week in Review are brief summaries of the articles.
Many include an excerpt, and all include message IDs for the articles I
cover. This may or may not be useful to you, depending on how long your
site stores articles in the newsgroup before expiring them.

** New archive sites **

Return of the Cancelpoodle

The Cancelpoodle, infamous for canceling articles to a.r.s for the cos, returned this week, canceling several articles which Helena Kobrin has declared not to contain material copyrighted by the church. The server used to post the cancels was contacted, as described by the system administrator. "Access to the NNTP server on the system ccvax.ucd.ie has been restricted to authorised systems only. Allowable activities once connected to the NNTP server have also been restricted. Hopefully this should eradicate the cancellation postings in alt.religion.scientology. "Arthur Green University College Dublin Computing Services Tel: +353 1 706 2456 Fax: +353 1 283 7077 E-mail: arthur@midir.ucd.ie" And here is one of the cancels: Path: senator-bedfellow.mit.edu!bloom-beacon.mit.edu!panix!hookup!swrinde! howland.reston.ans.net!Germany.EU.net!ieunet!ccvax.ucd.ie!btnet! peernews.demon.co.uk!odesi.com!noman Newsgroups: alt.religion.scientology Subject: cmsg cancel <3t5s68$rsu@ionews.io.org> Message-ID: From: noman@odesi.com Date: 2 Jul 1995 06:25:12 -0400 Control: cancel <3t5s68$rsu@ionews.io.org> Organization: Odesi Lines: 2 CANCELLED Message-ID: rnewman-0707950725530001@dial1-8.cybercom.net #####

Martin Poulter

Martin Poulter, maintainer of the U.K. cos critic's WWW page, has had his account suspended due to threats from the church. "The complaint is specifically about my posting copyrighted material to alt.religion.scientology. I believe that what I was doing was within my rights, but I will now have to stop doing so in order to protect my system operators. "I have told the university that I will do anything necessary to save them from further harassment. This will include taking copyrighted material off my Web page as well as toning down my posts to a.r.s. I have taken care in my postings to make sure that Scientology do not have a leg to stand on legally, but the University does not want any involvement in legal action and I do not want to put the Web service at risk." Watchman Threatened

A letter from James Walker was posted this week, describing harassment against Watchman, a cult awareness group. "We have once again been confronted by attorneys representing Scientology. They are alleging we have in our files and have been revealing certain of their 'trade secrets,' and are violating US copyright laws. In a June 13 letter, we were notified by one of Scientology's lawyers [Helena Kobrin] that they claim rights to "damages, an injunction, and IMPOUNDING OF MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED in perpetrating the infringing acts. "Craig Branch, Watchman's vice president, was also served a subpoena two weeks ago when he exited a plane in Chicago. Apparently, Scientologists already have gained access to some of our private information. They seem to know our itinerary even down to what flights we are taking and the content of private telephone conversations." Message-ID: visnet-0607951121470001@dal53.onramp.net #####

Eugene Ingram Update

News on the inclusion of Eugene Ingram, PI for the church, and his listing in the national criminal database, the NCIC. "He assigned investigating the Gene Engram warrant to Keen Bard. Mr. Bard reported back to him that the warrant was *never* in the NCIC, just in the FCIC (Florida's local list). "After due consideration of the charges (they are a 3rd class--the lowest-- felony warrant) they decided they *should* list it in the NCIC. This was done a week ago. The listing may be up by now, and will be up before the end of the month." Message-ID: 3thaml$ei5@news1.shell #####

Helena Kobrin Threatens

Attorney for the cos, Helena Kobrin, sent email to Grady Ward this week concerning his post of materials which Helena herself has verified are not copyrighted by the cos. "At the end of your posting you stated that I was a 'proven liar' because I claimed the document containing that heading was a forgery. "It should be apparent to you that if the document were not a forgery, we would have taken action against you, including, at a minimum, notifying you, and notifying Netcom, which would have canceled your account. It should, therefore, also be apparent to you that this document is a forgery, in light of the fact that no such actions were taken. "Your posting of this document and representing it as a genuine Scientology document by L. Ron Hubbard violates section 43(a) of the federal Lanham Act. Any further attempt to represent the document as authored by Mr. Hubbard or connected with the Church will be met with the appropriate legal actions." Clarification was found of what the Lanham Act entails. "Any person who, on or in connection with any goods or services, or any container for goods, uses in commerce any word, term, name, symbol, or device, or any combination thereof, or any false designation of origin, false or misleading description of fact, or false or misleading representation of fact, which - (A) is likely to cause confusion, or to cause mistake, or to deceive as to the affiliation, connection, or association of such person with another person, or as to the origin, sponsorship, or approval of his or her goods, services, or commercial activities by another person," [trimmed] Message-ID: gradyDBCy3o.KJx@netcom.com 1995Jul7.192849.18083@galileo.cc.rochester.edu #####

Chris Miller Update

Chris Miller replied again this week to allegations that s/he lied in a dead agent post to soc.women against Morrison & Foerster. "I will repeat one more time. Everything that I have said on this newsgroup is accurate and truthful. I have been attacked by hounds who don't care about the truth and would take any truthful statement, if it was altered from their own opinions, and twist and turn it until it was unrecognizable. "The posting on soc.women contained wholly accurate information except the personal information on my was disguised to protect my identity." Message-ID: 3td4e0$t9@covina.lightside.com #####

William S. Burroughs

Several excerpts were posted this week from William S. Burroughs. The first from his book "Burroughs on Scientology". Some highlights: "Mr. Hubbard's overtly fascist utterances (China is the real threat to world peace, Scientology is protecting the home, the church, the family, decent morals...positively no wife swapping. It's a dirty Communist trick...national boundaries, the concepts of RIGHT and WRONG against evil free thinking psychiatrist) can hardly recommend him to the militant students. Certainly it is time for the Scientologists to come out in plain English on one side or the other, if they expect the trust and support of young people. Which side are you on Hubbard, which side are you on?" And from an article in Rolling Stone, November 9, 1972. "I remember someone named Polly Stathis who, with eight other high criminals, showed the clearing course to a _psychiatrist_. RON put out a Fair Game Order on them in The Auditor newspaper. "No amnesty may ever cover them. "Any Sea Org member contacting them is to run R-2-45. "If they ever appear in any Org they are to be run on reverse processes. (Reverse processes according to RON can drive someone insane.) "They may be tricked, lied to, or destroyed. "_They are fair game_. "So when RON puts out an Enemy Order on someone, he is directing the hatred of every Scientologist against that person. This may actually cause damage. Will leave the reader to infer whether this magic is strong enough to materialize anonymous letters to the police which recently resulted in the seizure of 30,000 books of Mr. Girodias' Olympia Press edition of a London warehouse, to write other letters cutting off Mr. Girodias' phone supposedly at his request, and the disappearance of manuscripts from burglarized premises. Others who have opposed or deserted Scientology report similar incidents. It is time for Wogs to unite against such tactics. The publication of this book is an important step in this direction." Forbes Article

An article by famed Time magazine author Richard Behar from Forbes, October 27, 1986 was posted anonymously this week. As always, some highlights: "But the central fact is the money: hundreds of millions of dollars last seen in the form of cold cash or highly negotiable securities. 'It's a perfect story about greed and lust for power,' says William Franks, who was driven out of the organization in 1981, when he was the church's chairman of the board and its executive director international, the post Hubbard officially relinquished 20 years ago. 'If you understand it on that basis, and stay away from the 'religious' aspects, it makes perfect sense.' "The good ship Apollo got filled with hundreds of the most thoroughly programmed of Hubbard's signees. On board, life became very peculiar. Frank Watson, a chiropractor then in his 50s, told Forbes he was thrown overboard five times, sometimes blindfolded, for minor infractions. The drop was 26 feet. One Tanja Burden testified she was required to serve at the age of 13 (both parents were Scientologists) as Hubbard's personal slave, helping him dress and preparing his toiletries. There are many more such tales." Message-ID: 199507051305.PAA04194@utopia.hacktic.nl #####

French Bombing

Details were posted from Agence Presse France concerning an alleged bombing of a cos building in 1985. The target of the bombing appears to have been the National Institute of Statistics. Chris Miller wrote: "YOU are misreading jerk. Read the AP wire and the Agence Presse France wires which very specifically refer to the Black War letter received by Agence Presse France claiming responsibility for the school bombing. And the Agence Presse France article "'Black War' a revendique l'attentat a l'explosif commis vendredi soir contre un immeuble de l'INSEE a Malakoff (Hauts de Seine). 'Cette periode pre electorale de sondage signifie viol des foules, mensonges et manipulation de l'opinion. Imposons l'arret des sondages a des fins politiques' C'est le septieme attentat de ce groupe apparu en decembre 1985. Letter from Ron

A letter written by L Ron Hubbard to his wife [which one?] in August 1938 was posted this week. I found the following passages interesting. The first is amazing for a man who claimed auditing could cure most illnesses. The second is interesting for the company he puts himself in. "As for fingers, don't feel bad. Now about my operation....You may or may not know, because I have never yelled much about it, that I have a finger which is dead above the third joint and although it never had any real medical attention for all the banana skinning of it, it got well and I got used to it. And again I've got a chunk missing out of my shinbone and two holes in my jaws and a broken foot which sometimes protests and a once-wrenched shoulder which aches when it rains and a slight skull indenture which goes aflame in air cooled because of the bare-nerves around the edges. And then I've got another finger which, in the marcarpal, is bent like a green twig and gives me chills when I think that someday I may haul off and slug some mug and really ruin my hand. And then I've got a mule-disrepaired kidney which isn't quite nailed down. Further there seems to be something wrong with my lungs because they catch now and then and hurt just like hell which is probably the result of rib fracture. Further there's a broken knee cap which I never knew about and all I've got to do is touch it against a table leg and I go white. Of course there is also my right hip which still merrily snaps out of joint on embarrassing occasions. But outside of an infected ear and occasional sinus headaches and a once-smashed wrist I am in very decent shape. However, if you can put up with a guy who has all those things, you ought to be able to put up with one missing finger joint. "Psychiatrists, reaching the high of a dusty desk, tell us that Alexander and Jenghiz Khan and Napoleon were madmen. I know they were maligning some very intelligent gentlemen. So anybody who dares say that maybe he's going to cut things up considerably is immediately branded as a egomaniac or something equally ridiculous so that little men can still save their hides in the face of possible fury. It's one thing to go nutty and state, I'm Napoleon, nobody dares touch me, and quite another to say, If I watch my step and don't let anything stop me, I can make Napoleon look like a punk.. That's the difference." Message-ID: 3t7rfq$4ng@inferno.mpx.com.au 3t7rft$4ng@inferno.mpx.com.au 3t7rg1$4ng@inferno.mpx.com.au 3t7rg6$4ng@inferno.mpx.com.au 3t7rga$4ng@inferno.mpx.com.au #####

Overheard on the Apollo

An affidavit was posted this week from the Paulette Cooper case. John McClean described a conversation he overheard between LRH and Mary Sue Hubbard. "On or about July 14 while standing on the quarter deck of the ship just outside L. Ron Hubbard's dining lounge, I overheard a conversation between L. Ron Hubbard and his wife Mary Sue. "This conversation dealt with one Paulette Cooper, the authoress of an anti-Scientology book, 'The Scandal of Scientology'. Mary Sue was telling Ron of the fact that Paulette Cooper would be hit from all fronts with lawsuits from Scientology. Mary Sue stated that she felt that Paulette Cooper talked and wrote too much about Scientology. Mary Sue stated that she would totally destroy her credibility and that no publisher would ever touch her again, and resultantly, she would never get another book published. It was also stated by her Scientology would sue, and keep suing Paulette, until she broke." And from the same case, an affidavit was posted from Robert Dardano. "In February - March 1975, the B1 Bureau placed an agent named David Grace with a cleaning company that was cleaning the law offices of Bingham, Dana, and Gould. The purpose of placing Grace at the cleaning company was to burglarize the offices of James McHugh, the attorney for the Boston Globe. The G.O. wanted all of the files of McHugh in order to find any damaging information that could be used against the Globe in law suits and also to block publication of a forthcoming article about Scientology by a Globe reporter named John Wood. The B-1 Bureau also believed that Paulette Cooper may have corresponded with Wood and was seeking to obtain that correspondence."
