Legal threats from cult lawyers

Andreas Heldal-Lund posted on 2 May 2005 that Operation Clambake had received more legal threats from cult lawyers.

"Read all about it here:

http://www.xenu.net/news/

Complaint is being processed. My direct translation of cult lawyer legal conclusion:

'[It is my] evaluation that the information qualifies both as attempt to participate in murder by psychical encouragement, penal code §233, as threat, penal code §227, and as public encouragement to illegal act, penal code §140.'"

Scientologist implicated in pill scam

On 3 May an excerpt from the New York Daily Press ({long link]) was posted:

"[...]

Flynt backs pal who claims she was hustled

Porn mogul Larry Flynt was in tears last month at the funeral for Hustler magazine photographer Clive McLean, who spent much of his career shooting the notorious 'Barely Legal' series. Now Flynt is helping McLean's 46-year-old widow, Erica, in her bitter campaign against alternative medicine consultants to whom she paid thousand of dollars, she claims, in a desperate effort to save her mate.

'Clive McLean has been a friend and part of the Hustler family for close to 30 years,' Flynt told me in an E-mail. 'His wife, Erica McLean, has my full support.'

McLean says that she and Clive - who died March 29 at age 60, around six months after doctors gave him a diagnosis of terminal kidney cancer that had spread to his brain - were exploited, especially by Los Angeles nutritional consultant Feline Butcher.

Butcher - a Scientologist who has counted Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Lisa Marie Presley, Smokey Robinson and Berry Gordy among her celebrity clients - referred the McLeans to a Canadian medicine man who dispensed various pills.

'He sold Clive a lot of 'magic pills' that came in bags that weren't even labeled,' Erica told me. 'We didn't even know what was in them.'"

Cultists fight mental health screening

A "Chicago OTC, CCHR all hands call" from the "Chicago OT Committee" of 3 May 2005 was posted to the news group on 3 May, excerpts of which follow:

"Dear OT Committee Members,

Please read what follows. There is a very important event taking place on the 18th in Washington. Three congressmen are going to speak out on their opposition to mental health screening. CCHR supporters from across the country are flying into Washington to attend this forum and then go and speak to their individual congressmen and senators. If there is any possible way that you can attend this vital event, do it.

CONGRESSMAN RON PAUL AGREES TO SPEAK AT THE WASHINGTON DC BRIEFING AGAINST MENTAL HEALTH SCREENING - MAY 18TH!!!!!!

CCHR INTERNATIONAL, THE FLORIDA CITIZENS FOR SOCIAL REFORM (FCSR) AND THE ASSOCIATION OF CITIZENS FOR SOCIAL REFORM (CSR) ARE HOSTING THE BRIEFING BY THREE POWERFUL US CONGRESSMEN! US CONGRESSMEN TOM FEENEY (FL), DAN BURTON (IN) AND NOW RON PAUL (TX) HAVE AGREED TO SPEAK ON THEIR OPPOSITION TO MENTAL HEALTH SCREENING!!!

RON PAUL IS NOT ONLY A US CONGRESSMAN BUT A MEDICAL DOCTOR. HE IS KNOWN AS THE CHAMPION OF CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS IN THE US CONGRESS. CONGRESSMAN PAUL IS ALSO THE CO-AUTHOR OF THE PARENTAL CONSENT ACT OF 2005 (HR 181) WHICH WOULD PREVENT FUNDING FOR MENTAL HEALTH SCREENING!

TOM FEENEY IS VIEWED BY OTHER CONGRESSMEN AS ONE OF THE REAL POWER FORCES IN THE US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. IMPORTANTLY, HE IS CURRENTLY THE OTHER CO-AUTHOR OF THE PARENTAL CONSENT ACT OF 2005 (HR 181).

DAN BURTON WAS THE CHAIRMAN OF THE HOUSE GOVERNMENT REFORM COMMITTEE WHERE HE HELD HEARINGS ON THE ISSUE OF THE LABELING AND DRUGGING OF SCHOOL CHILDREN BY THE PSYCHIATRIC INDUSTRY. AS CHAIRMAN, HE INVITED LISA MARIE PRESLEY AND BRUCE WISEMAN (CCHR US PRESIDENT) TO TESTIFY ON THIS ISSUE!

THIS IS A RARE FORUM IN WHICH SEVERAL US CONGRESSMEN WILL PERSONALLY HEAR OUR CONCERNS, ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS AND PROVIDE TRAINING ON HOW TO WORK WITH ELECTED OFFICIALS AND HOW TO GET LEGISLATION PASSED.

SETTING APPOINTMENTS WITH MEMBERS OF CONGRESS

FIND YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS: If you are unfamiliar with whom your Members of Congress are, go to www.congress.org. Under 'Write Elected Officials' there's a place to type in your zip code and your Representative and two Senators for your state will come up as well as the President. (You may be required to give your 9-digit zip code, so have this handy.) If you click the 'info' link under each Member's name, it will give you the phone numbers for contacting them. (If you don't have Internet access, call the Capitol Hill Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for the Representative of your district and the two Senators for your state and how to contact them).

Talk to the Appointment Secretary: Call each and ask for the Appointment Secretary. Because you are a constituent visiting Capitol Hill from your home state, you want to visit the Member if at all possible instead of just a congressional aide. Tell the Appointment Secretary that you're looking at meeting the Congressman or Senator some time between 12:00 P.M. and 4:30 P.M. on May 18th. Tell them you're only going to be in town for that one day only. Be persistent, but polite. It may help to mention titles you may have, such as doctor, lawyer, CEO of your company or other impressive data. If there is just no way for him/her to meet with you, then see if you can meet the Legislative Director. If that's a no-go, then go for the Legislative Assistant that deals with Health or Education issues.

[...]

The president of The Citizens Commission on Human Rights for the United States has written the following alert to help stop the funding for the mental health screening program. Please read this and the attachment by our Government Affairs Director. Then please modify and fax the attached letter to your Congressman, etc.

[SAMPLE CONGRESSIONAL LETTER ON H.R. 181]

The Honorable (name) ____ March/April 2005
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Representative ______________,

I am writing to ask you to please co-sponsor H.R. 181, the 'Parental Consent Act of 2005,' sponsored by Representatives Ron Paul and Tom Feeney. I am asking this as your constituent. I am extremely alarmed at the prospect of universal mental health screening in the schools, something the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health (NFC) has recommended. I implore you to take a leadership role in defense of our children and parents and in support of the true mission of schools by signing onto and working for passage of H.R. 181, which will prohibit federal funding of any kind of universal mental health screening. ..."

German magazine doubts cult propaganda

A 2 May post contained an excerpt from the 1 May New York Post, according to which Tom Cruise said in an interview with German "Spiegel" magazine,

"... 'In Scientology, we have the only successful drug rehabilitation program in the world. It's called Narconon.'

Spiegel countered: 'That's not correct. Yours is never mentioned among the recognized detox programs. Independent experts warn against it because it is rooted in pseudo-science.'

Cruise answered: 'It's a statistically proven fact that there is only one successful drug rehabilitation program in the world. Period.'

Spiegel noted, 'With all due respect, we doubt that.'"

Narconon recruiting in West Virginia

On May 5 and 6 Dave Touretzky posted messages that Narconon was coming to Mineral County, West Virginia

[long link]

"Narconon coming to Mineral County Rehabilitation done without medication

By Bobbie L. Carpenter, Times-News Staff Writer
Thursday, May 5, 2005 9:13 AM EDT

KEYSER, W.Va. - While researching a paper for her master's degree, nurse practitioner Tammy Hansford stumbled across a unique form of drug rehabilitation called Narconon.

'My paper was on substance abuse and I had to actually go to a center to do research on it,' said Hansford, who obtained her master's degree this semester. 'I went out to Stonehawk (a Narconon facility) in Battlecreek, Mich. It impressed me how they do drug withdraw without more drugs.'

Narconon, which stands for Narcotics-none, is a four- to six-month program that specializes in drug rehabilitation without the use of medication. Based on the works of American author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard, patients, at their own pace, exercise and use a sauna to sweat out toxins, eat healthy and attend life skill classes.

Turning the patient's mind off the body, therapeutic touch therapy also is used to combat leg cramps, nausea and stomach cramps - all symptoms of withdrawal.

Hansford plans to bring the program to Mineral County this fall. It will begin on an outpatient basis. 'We are planning to open between September-October at the latest,' she said, adding the program will later expand into an inpatient, residential facility. 'We will offer employees a pay raise after a 90-day probation period, health insurance and 401K, eventually.'

Employees currently are being trained for the outpatient facility that will serve 30 patients. The positions will include drug assistant specialists, case mangers and employees to operate the sauna and conduct course work.

[...]"

Hansford's number was given for volunteers and fund-raising.

The Mineral County, WV web site:

"lick on the 'ounty Commission'link and you get:"

http://www.mineralcountywv.com/countycommission/index.asp

Mineral County Commission
Mineral County Courthouse
150 Armstrong Street
Keyser, WV 26726

...

Touretzky added:

"Tell them what happened in California. Send them to Stop-Narconon.org Narconon-Exposed.org, and Crackpots.org. Ask them why, if Narconon is so great, it cannot get accreditation from JCAHO, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. (Only one Narconon facility is accredited: Narconon Arrowhead. And that accreditation is by CARF, which is worthless. JCAHO is the gold standard that insurance companies look for. Narconon will NEVER qualify.)

Hearing from one person is good, but hearing from a dozen is likely to have a greater impact. Newspapers don't want to get caught missing an important story. I don't know what the County Commissioners are thinking right now, but if they're like most politicians, they're going to want to be seen protecting their constituents from exploitation, not cozying up to a reviled cult group with satanist overtones.

Who's fronting the money to set up this Narconon facility in Mineral County? Where will the sauna be located, and what medical personnel will be on hand to monitor the 'students'? What effectiveness claims is Narconon making to the folks in Mineral County, and where are the data to back up those claism? Lots of questions; let's get some answers."
