The answer lies in Dianetics. This is a therapy, invented by the founder of $cientology, L. Ron Hubbard, which is offered as an alternative to psychology. The dianetics courses are cheap in the early stages, but they will become more expensive as you do more of them. These are the first signs of the greed of the cult, though this is often not obvious to the victim. $cientology does not believe in psychology or modern medicine. Instead, it tries to heal everything with dianetics. This can be dangerous for some people who really develope an illness. Dianetics is done with the (in)famous E-meter, a cheap lie-detector sold for lots of money to ignorant cult members. With the use of this device, people are audited by a supervisor. The supervisor confronts the cult member with old memories in order to exorcise evil spirits, call body thetans. The supervisor will ask the cult member detailed personal questions regarding his or hers memories, and these are reported and filed after an "auditing session". Numerous cases are known in which the information from the auditing files was used to harass people after they leave $cientology. $cientologists and ex-$cientologists are not supposed to talk about what actually goes on behind the scenes within the cult. in reality, Dianetics is a very powerful brainwashing method in which the supervisors can gain power over the cult members, who later become "auditors" themselves. After several years of Dianetics courses the cult member will have lost most of his or hers money, will no longer have contact with the family and friends, and his or hers life will be utterly ruined. Only those who successfully do all Dianetics courses, i.e., only those who have been sufficiently brainwashed and have paid sufficient amounts of money, are allowed to continue to the Advanced Operating Thetan (OT) courses, and learn about Emperor Xenu.
