Re: Navy: L. Ron Hubbard shot his mast off
[08 Feb 1998]

Moulton was also the one who related the story (heard by all for the first time when the words came out of his mouth) how Hubbard's ship had been sunk off Java (in the South Pacific) and how Hubbard went into the jungles and fought the Japanese and was machine gunned in the back but managed to get on a life raft and escape into the ocean where he was picked up.

This incident was given by Capt. Moulton who was Hubbard's First Officer
on the 815. Moulton related it during his testimony in the Armstrong case.
Moulton had been called by Scientology to testify about Hubbard since he
thought so highly of the man and he dropped this in along the way, as an
amusing story about the lack of skill in the men then. Swiveling machine
guns on a ship like that are normally set so they can swing about and do
self-damage but the men hadn't done that yet and so they went wild and
shot off some antennae, if I recall.

and fought the Japanese and was machine gunned in the back but managed to
get on a life raft and escape into the ocean where he was picked up. It
seems that Hubbard had told Moulton this story after the two men were
taking a piss together. (True! Read on.) It was in a standard men's urinal
and Moulton had noticed there was blood in Hubbard's urine and Moulton
commented on it and that was Hubbard's story: he was still suffering
kidney damage from the Japanese machine gun bullets into his back.

Moulton had agreed to testify because he wanted to return some favors back
to Hubbard for some done for him when they were in the Navy. Moulton and I
spoke extensively back then. I even visited him back at his home in Maine.
He was a very kind person. He was, he felt, returning the favor and so his
testimony was very kind towards Hubbard. (Moulton thought the machine gun
incident was amusing and he really never questioned Hubbard's veracity on
the other story.)

Moulton passed away a few years ago. He had been suffering from a nerve
degeneration from accidentally consuming infected (red sea) seafood.

TYPO: I should have said below, so the guns CANNOT swing about and do
self-damage.
