The 12,000-subscriber cable system targets existing pay-television subscribers with an offer of free installation and free service for one month to the first 200 people who sign on for three months of PeRKInet. "Subscribers who already have begun using PeRKInet have been overwhelmingly positive in their response," said Gayla Kalp, vice president of marketing at Internet Ventures, which offers cable operators turnkey infrastructure and management for high-speed data service. "Our next step is to use the resources available to Internet Ventures and Avenue to expand the base of users." For residential customers, PeRKInet uses a phone-return cable modem that delivers 256-kilobit-per-second service downstream via cable channels and either 33.6 Kbps or 128 Kbps upstream over phone lines. Installation costs $99; monthly service $39.90; and cable modem rental $17 per month. Modems can be purchased at $350. Internet Ventures can be reached at www.perki.net --- Internet Ventures Inc., a Los Angeles-based Internet access provider, has filed for a $5 million initial public offering, which is to be completed over the Internet. Such offerings, known as direct public offerings, or DPOs, are allowed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission after a filing of a Regulation A offering prospectus. Internet Ventures said it will offer 454,545 shares at $11 each in the offering, to be advertised on its Web site. After the offering, the company will have 3 million shares outstanding, valuing it at $33 million. The company has also advertised a $750,000 private placement of shares, aimed at wealthy individuals, on its Web site. In its SEC filing, the company said it would use the proceeds from the offering to finance its Perkinet Internet access service, combining regular phone lines and cable television facilities in an attempt to exceed the speed of Integrated Services Digital Network, or ISDN, lines at a lower cost. The company launched the service in February in Ventura, Calif., with Avenue Cable TV to a target audience of 12,000 cable subscribers. --- Internet Ventures Inc. has bought four access providers in the Stockton, Calif., area. The four purchased networks are Stockton Net, VorTech Networld Access, Digital Communications and Touchtone Network. The first two Internet service providers, or ISPs, will continue to operate under their present names, while the others will be merged into the IVI Community Wide Web of Stockton, one of Internet Venture's multiple system operations. "For Internet Ventures, the consolidation offers economies of scale, without disrupting Community Wide Web's presence as a truly local ISP," said Don Janke, president of IVI. Company officials said IVI now serves 25 percent of the Stockton Internet market. Los Angeles-based IVI uses a proprietary technology called PeRKinet, which combines standard telephone and cable lines. The hybrid system supports download speeds of up to 10 megabits per second. --- Internet Ventures Inc. has expanded its Internet provider acquisition streak with two purchases on the West Coast. The Los Angeles-based Internet access company bought 550-subscriber Tidepool Internet, based in Arcata, Calif., and 230-subscriber Medford Internet in Medford, Ore. With the new buys, IVI now has 12,500 subscribers, mostly in California. The terms of the deals were not disclosed. "Our consolidation in northern California will be critical as we move forward with plans to deploy our PeRKinet high-speed Internet-over-cable service in the north coast area, and our expansion into Oregon ultimately will help us bring IVI's consumer-friendly services to new marketplaces," said IVI President Don Janke. PeRKinet is a proprietary, hybrid system that combines standard telephone and cable lines to support download speeds of up to 10 megabits per second. Janke said both Tidepool and Medford Internet will continue to run as independent companies under their own names. ---
