FROM THE FILES OF THE FBI #21

May 15, 1958

Federal Bureau of Investigation

Washington, D.C.

ATTENTION: J. Edgar Hoover

Dear Sir:

Enclosed is a pamphlet outlining specific principles of an organization called Hubbard Association of Scientology International located at 1812 19th St., N.W., Washington 9, D.C. This propaganda appears to be contradictory to our American Democratic way of government and is being distributed by mail all over the United States and other parts of the world.

As this organization's activities have a direct bearing on my personal life, please let me know of any information you may have in your files, which is available to me, concerning this group.

I shall look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.

Very truly yours,

[SIGNATURE BLOCK BLACKED OUT]

Dear [BLACKED OUT]

Your letter dated May 15, 1958, with enclosure, has been received.

While I would like to be of service, I must advise that this Bureau has not investigated the Hubbard Association of Scientology International, and I am unable to be of assistance to you.

It is suggested that you consider contacting your local medical association in connection with this problem.

Sincerely yours,

[stamped] J. Edgar Hoover

John Edgar Hoover
Director

NOTE: The Bureau has received numerous citizen queries concerning this association which alleges a new method of curing mental illness that is so radical in its results that it is equivalent to man's discovery of fire. It is noted that Hubbard was accused of being mentally unbalanced by his wife when she filed for divorce from him.
