FROM THE FILES OF THE FBI 265
February 20, 1973
[ADDRESS BLOCK BLACKED OUT]
Dear Mrs. [BLACKED OUT]
I have received your letter of Febuary 13th and certainly understand the
concern which prompted you to contact the FBI. While I do wish it were
possible to be of help to you, the facts you presented do not disclose a
violation of Federal law within the investigative jurisdiction of the FBI
and I am, therefore, unable to take the action you requested.
With regard to your request for information on Scientology, this Bureau is
strictly an investigative agency of the Federal government and, as such,
neither makes evaluations nor draws conclusions as to the character or
integrity of any organization, publication, or individual. I deeply
regret that I cannot be of assistance to you in this instance.
Sincerely yours,
[stamped] L. Patrick Gray III

NOTE: The Bureau has received information in the past from Ron Hubbard who
runs the Academy of Scientology. Hubbard's theory of "Scientology" is
that this alleged science instills self-confidence and assists individuals
in removing mental problems and obtaining human ability. Hubbard has been
described by his wife as being "hopelessly insane." (Bureau file
