[BLACKED OUT ADDRESS BLOCK]
Dear [BLACKED OUT]
I have received your letter dated Mard 24, 1961, and your
interest in communicating with me is indeed appreciated.
While I would like to be of assistance, the jurisdiction and
responsibilities of the FBI, strictly an investigative agency of
the Federal Government, do not extend to furnishing evaluations or
comments concerning the character or integrity of any individual,
organization or publication. I am sure you will understand the
necessity for this policy and will not infer that our files do or
do not contain the information you desire.
In view of your interest in the internal security of the United
States, I am enclosing some literature which you may wish to read.
Sincerely yours,

L. Ron Hubbard is associated with a number of organizations
apparently having their headquarters at 1812 19th Street, N.W.,
Washington, D.C. Among these organizations are the "Hubbard
Association of Scientologists, International, Hubbard Dianetic
Research Foundation and the Academy of Scientology. His
organizations allegedly advance a new method of curing mental
illness known as "dianetic." The April 24, 1951, issue of the
"Times Herald," Washington, D.C., revealed that Hubbard's wife
charged in a divorce suit that he was "hopelessly insane" and he
subjected her to "scientific torture experiments." According to the
article, "competent medical advisors recommended that Hubbard be
committed to a private sanitarium for psychiatric observation and
treatment of paranoid schizophrenia." The Bureau has received
numerous inquiries regarding Hubbard and his organizations. A
reference to the Founding Church of Scientology of Florida
indicates that this organization is affiliated with Hubbard's
organizations.
