Alt.religion.scientology Week in Review summarizes the most significant
postings from the Usenet group Alt.religion.scientology for the preceding
week for the benefit of those who can't follow the group as closely as
they'd like. Out of thousands of postings, I attempt to include news of
significant events, new affidavits, court rulings, new contributors,
whatever. I hope you find it useful. Like many readers of a.r.s, I have a
kill file. So please take into consideration that I may not have seen some
of the most significant postings.

The articles in A.r.s Week in Review are brief summaries of the articles.
Many include an excerpt, and all include message IDs for the articles I
cover. This may or may not be useful to you, depending on how long your
site stores articles in the newsgroup before expiring them.

Big Story Follow-up

A new development was reported this week in the aftermath of the UK TV show, the Big Story. Threatening letters were sent from a cos lawyer to some of the participants in demonstrations outside the London org. They object to the pamphlet distributed at that demonstration. "This leaflet is wholly and deliberately misleading, scurrilous and defamatory of our client. Unless it is immediately withdrawn, and the other steps set out below complied with, our instructions are to commence a libel action against you. "The picture presented by what can only be described as a propagandist leaflet designed maliciously to incite hatred towards our client, is wholly false. Accordingly unless you do the following within 7 days of the date of this letter proceedings will be issued against you, including a claim for defamation damages and costs, without further recourse: "1. Immediately cease distribution of the leaflet. 2. Destroy all copies of the leaflet in your custody or control 3. Provide a full apology to our client, including a complete retraction. 4. Undertake not to repeat the same or any similar libels in the future." The leaflet included the following quotes: "We can brainwash faster than the Russians - 20 seconds to total amnesia "We are responsible for getting people through to Clear and OT and reserve therefore as our right the use of any means or force necessary to accomplish this "Scientology is both immoral and socially obnoxious... In my judgement it is corrupt, sinister and dangerous. It is corrupt because it is based on lies and deceit and has as its real objective money and power for Mr Hubbard, his wife and those close to him at the top. It is sinister because it indulges in infamous practices both to its adherents who do not toe the line unquestioningly, and to those who criticise or oppose it. It is dangerous because it is out to capture people, especially children and impressionable young people, and indoctrinate and brainwash them so that they become the unquestioning captives and tools of the cult, withdrawn from ordinary thought, living and relationships with others. -Mr Justice Latey, High Court decision, July 1984" Also posted to a.r.s this week, a flyer distributed in the East Grinstead area, attempting to Dead Agent Roger Brown, the vicar of St. Swithun's Church, an organizer of the demonstration. Some excerpts from this flyer: "Although his efforts to divide the community and spread prejudice have not harmed the Church of Scientology itself, the intolerance created has often resulted in personal suffering for individual East Grinstead residents who are members of the Church. In the past Reverend Brown's sermons attacking Scientology have been followed by acts of intolerance and even violence, towards individual Scientologists. "His views about Scientology to a large degree mirror the malign intentions of a sordid group of highly-discredited individuals - many of whom are opposed to religion in general - and not the traditional or official views of the established Church. "Ignorance, prejudice, and crime often go hand in hand, and through acts calculated to inflame bigotry, Reverend Brown appears to be working hand in hand with an admitted thief- East Grinstead dentist Ron Lawley. Is Reverend Brown merely being manipulated by Lawley and his cohorts or is there something more sinister to the role he plays." PI Dirty Tricks

Two acts of vandalism were reported this week by critics. The suspects are obvious. Tom Klemesrud reports: "I returned home tonight to find that out of the 40 units in my building, my mailbox was the only one that had been pried open. Also, Grady Ward reports: "Similarly with the raking of my front door locks (now replaced with high security locks) and the recent inquiry into the physical location of one of my ISPs by two men identifying themselves as "FBI agents" to a local development agency." Helena Threatens

Helena Kobrin, lawyer in charge of harassment for the cos, was busy this week sending threatening letters to a.r.s posters for quoting 5 lines from the OT7 document. New recipients this week include Bruce J. Bell, Blind Carlos, Maggie Council, 'Jesse Garon', James J. Lippard, Old Salt, Doctorb Science, Tony Sidaway, Tim Skirvin, Keith Spurgeon, Steve, Donna Stuckert, and TarlaStar. Letters were also sent to several Internet Service Providers. Henry posted: "After the threat to me was extended to my sysadmin, I have canceled all messages which contain 'fair use' reproduction of the six lines of OT VII which I have quoted." Andrew Burt, sysadmin of Henry's site explains his response: "I also explained to her that, if she could supply me with absolute proof that you violated the law, I would revoke your account (per standard Nyx terms). I did explain that the proof needed to be convincing, not just her word against yours. Toward that end, I indicated that a court judgment against you would be an example of such convincing proof." Frivolous Helena

Speaking Helena Kobrin, this was posted to a.r.s this week. "On May 2, 1994, Helena Kobrin, counsel for the Church of Scientology, was ordered to pay sanctions in the total sum of $17,775 for filing a frivolous complaint in federal court. "Ms. Kobrin prepared and filed an amended complaint on behalf of plaintiffs Religious Technology Center and the Church of Scientology International against defendants David Mayo and the Church of New Civilization. The amended complaint alleged that defendants violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act (RICO). The Court dismissed the action. The defendants then filed a motion for sanctions against, among others, Helena Kobrin and her firm, Bowles & Moxon. The Court granted the motion after observing: "This RICO complaint does not pass muster under Rule 11(b)(2) that the claims be 'warranted by existing law.' Neither is any 'nonfrivolous argument' made 'for the extension, modification, or reversal of existing law' in support of plaintiffs' RICO theory. The claims are frivolous. Alleging the RICO claims in the amended complaint was objectively unreasonable under the circumstances." Message-ID: 199507240206.EAA09284@utopia.hacktic.nl> #####

Hill 10

Word this week that the cos considers a.r.s a Hill 10 situation. "She told me that the Internet is considered a 'Hill 10', which is Clam Talk(tm) for the highest priority 'flap' or public relations disaster." It was later clarified that Hill 10 means a junior has mishandled a situation, and it is time for his/her superiors to immediately correct the error. So much for Andy Milne. Paulette Cooper

SP extrordinaire Paulette Cooper posted to a.r.s for the first time this week. Her story is one of the best examples of criminal behavior by the cos. She writes: "I'm very busy this summer promoting my current book ("277 Secrets Your Dog Wants You To Know,") editing my forthcoming book, developing another, and creating a web page, (none of this has to do with Scientology) and I only spend a few hours a week on line (I'm on AOL and Compuserve so far). "But I'll try to slip in a few minutes every other week for 5 or 6 weeks to discuss such things as: whether I'm hiding; why I settled with Scientology; how I feel about 'The Scandal of Scientology' being on the net; whether I'm being harassed by Scientology now; and speaking as an elder historian (today being my birthday, I"m feeling kind of old) who has watched Scientology for 27 years, what I think is the future of Scientology, the German situation, and why I think it's futile to fight them now." Eradication of Psychiatrists

A follow-up was posted this week to the announcement of Mike Rinder's speech on plans to eradicate all Psychiatry. Here, according to an anonymous contributor, is how they plan to do it. "1. Find all the people who have been harmed by the psychs. 2. Befriend these people, and as friends, help them to sue the psychs. 3. BUT..they need to stamp out the breeding grounds too! When they sue the individual psychs, they are going to sue the school that trained them!!! AND...of course it is obvious to anyone that the insurance companies will not long put up with this obvious blatant disregard for the good of humanity on the part of the psychs and their training schools, so they will put this nonsense to rest in short order by refusing to insure these no goods. And, they are embarking on a massive PR campaign. They have just finished a glossy booklet that explains to the public how the psychs are responsible for racism. He read several quotations from the book; they were indeed astounding. And they sent this book out to all the civil rights and minority group leaders, who were, needless to say, astounded. So all they need to do is keep enlightening people, and that will be the end of the psychs. Message-ID: rnewman-2507950252190001@dial1-1.cybercom.net> #####

Airplane Door Goals

The apparent companion to the Gorilla Goals, The Airplane Door Goals, was posted anonymously this week. "This goal pattern was in use in an aircraft type set between 315 trillion years ago and 216 trillion years ago and less, and is the pattern which precedes the Helatrobus Implants in this galaxy. "It was given in the mocked up fuselage of an aircraft with the thetan fixed before an aircraft door. (There are also two or more aircraft fuselages used in the Helatrobus Implants, but the preclear moved through them, was not fixed in them). The Helatrobus Implants existed only between 52 trillion and 38 trillion years ago, the total life span of the Helatrobus government. Message-ID: 3v3d03$28o@utopia.hacktic.nl> #####

Rituals

An excerpt from Ceremonies of the Founding Church of Scientology was posted this week. It describes a strange wedding ceremony, with the bride and groom saying "thank you" frequently. Here's the informal christening ceremony, as performed by Elron at the Freedom Congress, July 7, 1957. "Here we go. (To the child): How are you? All right. Now your name is ___. You got that? good. There you are. Did that upset you? Now, do you realize that you're a member of the HASI? Pretty good, huh?" And by Tom Esterbrook, A Funeral Oration for Homo Sapiens. "Under the clouds of H Bomb pitted Earth You sleep. Where are you now, O Man?" Message-ID: Qk5RNbi00YUr8hP6pd@andrew.cmu.edu>
